The legend

Ascilò

Ascilò is the name of a well, or rather a "pozzella" — the largest of them all, and the one with the best water. In Salento, water was rare and precious: pozzelle were underground dry-stone structures built into natural hollows, giving fresh water even in summer. Every well had a name, a history and a use, and was a place where people would meet.
